Book #25: "Billy and Me" ....Finished!!

Book #25 "Billy and Me" by Giovanna Fletcher: "Yes, I admit- I'm one of those annoying people who walk through life oblivious to my surroundings, while spying any impending dangers in my peripheral vision, thanks to my literary obsession! I still manage to keep up the obligatory nod of the head or polite 'Good morning' to the people I pass, whilst continuing to stay in the world of Cathy and Heathcliff." page 11
So I woke up this morning to realize that I have 124 pages left to read before tonight, after walking and reading all day (which i admittedly do ALL THE TIME, which is pretty much why the above quote is so appropriate) and literately just locking myself into a room for an hour straight I am finished! THANK GOD!!! So now lets get to talking about the book, shall we?
"Billy and Me" was written by the wife of Tom from Mcfly (the band from the UK that I am totally in love with, go check them out BTW). So when I heard that she was writing this book I couldn't wait to read it!
The story follows Sophie and (obviously) Billy. Billy is a famous actor coming into the height of his career when he meets Sophie who lives in a small town outside London where Billy happens to be filming his next film. They meet and can't get enough of each other.
Things, in my personal opinion, went really fast in their relationship but I guess I have to remember that 10 pages in the book can be 10 weeks in the book. In a matter of months it is apparent that they are crazy about each other and Billy confesses that he doesn't want to go anywhere without her, so what does he do? He asks her to move in with him in London to be with him 24/7. She agrees.
In the months that follow there are many ups and downs that Sophie deals with as she finds out just how hard it can be to be a part of Billy's life while at the same trying to still be herself and not lose herself in the craziness of it all.
And I would have to say that that is one of the things I liked best about this book, was that when it talked about awards shows, or them filming on set it showed that not-so-glamorous side of things as well. It really did an amazing job of capturing how an outsider would feel when suddenly thrown into this glamorous/dazzling/hectic/trying life.
As a first book from Giovanna Fletcher I say good job. I look forward to reading more from her.
As I told you all before, with me struggling to do this 100 books in a year while in college I changed it to 25 for this year. I am now pleased to say that I have finished!!! I will be restarting and going for 50 next year. First book has not been picked yet but be sure to check back here as it will be posted within the next few days!
Hope you all have a safe New Years and are as excited as I am about the new year to come. Thanks for sticking with me through all this! I'll be back with more thoughts on books and what-not :)
   That's all for now,

Book #24 "One Day"... Finished!!

Book #24 "One Day" by David Nicholls: "The city had defeated her, just like they said it would. Like some overcrowded party, no-one had noticed her arrival, and no-one would notice if she left." page 56.
Want to start by pointing out that the above quote doesn't really represent this book very well but it is the one that I like the most, so yea, there's that.
"One Day" was made a movie back in 2011, which is how I first heard about it. The movie wasn't the best thing ever but, as I have said before, I am a strong believer in the whole book-being-better-then-the-movie-theory.
The story follows the life's of Dex and Em, whom become unlikely friends(/let's be honest lovers) throughout the story. The really interesting thing about the book was the style of how it was written. Each chapter represented a different year (chap. #1 would be 1988 chap.#2 1989...) and it would just focus on whatever was going on in their life's that day. I thought it was a cool and different approach to telling the story.
If I was to give you very brief idea of what "One Day" is about I would have to say that (as cheesy as it sounds) it's about how you can have one person come into your life and if you realize it in the beginning or not they completely change your life for the better. And how unfortunately sometimes it takes people until that person is gone to fully realize this.
Maybe it's just me but I think that this is one of the better books that have realistically captured the ups and downs of friend ship and really life in general. How in the beginning they are just graduating college and are unsure what they are going to do next with their life and goes through the really down moments through all their moments of triumph. But in contrast to other books, how your always kinda like, "well, sure that happens in books but that could never happen in real life." While your reading "One Day" it almost seems like someone is just telling you how something actually went down in their life. It was just a refreshing change.
Over all I found it a really good read and it will definitely be one that I will be recommending :). Next book up for #25 is a special one to me it is "Billy and Me" by Giovanna Fletcher. Giovanna Fletcher is married to Tom Fletcher from one of my favorite UK bands Mcfly. I've been really excited to read this so I'm really looking forward to it!
On a side note I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas I hope your all having a lovely day with your families and that you get a chance to cuddle up with a book before the year is over.
     That's all for now,

Book #23: "Two Lies and a Spy" ...Finished!!

Book #23 "Two Lies and a Spy" by Kat Carlton: Ok so I honestly don't even know what to say about this. I know that I said that I liked to try to read a more 'mindless' teen book in between harder novels but this was just...wow.
Before you are confused that 'wow' was NOT meant in a good way. At all. It's not that the book was bad, and honestly I don't know why I thought it would be any better then it was but I don't know maybe I just need to stop reading these dorky young teen books...
I will say one good thing about it, no make that two things, 1: It did serve the purpose of being a easy read (which was the original reason that I picked it up) 2: The ending did surprise me quite a bit. It didn't have the whole traditional ending thing going for it, however this was unfortunately not enough to redeem it, at least not in my mind it wasn't.
The other thing that really bugged the crap out of me, and for anyone who knows me I'm sure you will find this ironic, was the insane lack of correct punctuation in the entire book. Whoever was in charge of editing seriously needs to be talked to! It was a lot of common sense stuff that was the part that killed me, and yes I know that I don't always have correct punctuation on here but I feel like I at least am smart enough to get the basics.
Ok, enough of the rant. The next book up for #24 is going to be "One Day" by David Nicholls. Oh, and on a side note today is the last day of the semester which means as of tomorrow I will have a ton more time on my hands to read! :) hopefully means that the post will start coming more often, at least until the spring semester starts up in January anyways.

  That's all for now,

Book #22: "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire...Finished!!

Book #22 "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire:
"Elphaba the girl does not know how to see her father as a broken man. All she knows is that he passes his brokenness on to her. Daily his habits of loathing and self-loathing cripple her. Daily she loves him back because she knows no other way." page 382
Generally I try to pick quotes from the book that kind of sum up the book to give those of you who haven't read it to give you a more general idea about it. It was a long book but for some reason I never came across such a quote. But I did however find the one at the top of this page that I fell in love with, so yea, you get that one instead.
There was some points while reading this book that i just would get super confused. They went off on all these super long, deep, theological rants that at times I would have to go back and read stuff multiple times really slowly before I would even start to understand what the heck they were saying.
I grew up watching "The Wizard of Oz", as I'm sure most of you did, and I got to say I always kind of just assumed that the Wicked Witch of the West was evil, I personally never remember even questioning it. So, if you have read this book, then when I read this you can understand why my mind was completely blown and I had to reconsider everything I have ever known about this story. I guess it just goes to show what they say is true, there is always more then one side to every story.
Seriously though I honestly think that I have jumped ship as far as who's team, either the Wicked Witch or Dorothy, I am on. Because obviously when you watch the movie you are all on Dorothy's team wanting her to get home, get back to her family and go on living her happy little life. But then you go and read this book and you get all the background story of the Witch and the life she has lead and you realize that maybe she isn't really evil at all, or at least not the extent that they made her out to be in the movie.
And while on the note of the movie, may I just say that I do understand that they had to change/cut out stuff in order to make the story work but at the same time I just kinda wish they had done it a little differently that's all.
I don't want to say more and ruin it for any of you, if anyone actually is reading this, who have not read it yet. I highly highly recommend it especially if you grew up with "Wizard of Oz" this just gives you a completely different view on the whole story.
So now that I have read a larger more brain-challenging-novel it is time to give my brain a bit of a rest and read one of my dorky young teen books. Book #23 is going to be "Two Lies and a Spy" by Kat Carlton. Now while we are on the topic of the number of books that I am at I know what your thinking, "HA, she's never going to make it to 100 books by the end of the year." well good for you to go and figure that out all on your own. Your probably right, so this year I am aiming for 25. I know it's lame but you try being in college and doing this it is HARD! So next year I will try harder and go for the big 100 again, hope I didn't disappoint you all to much.
   That's all for now,
     Michaela Jane

P.S. OH! Super fast may I just say the whole part about at the end about who the Wicked Witch of the West father was totally BLEW MY MIND!! Like I can't even tell you!

Book #21: "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows"...Finished!!

Book #21 "Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows" by J.K. Rowling: "Dumbledore knew, as Voldemort knew, that Harry would not let anyone else die for him now that he had discovered it was in his power to stop it. The images of Fred, Lupin, and Tonks lying dead in the Great Hall forced their way back into his mind's eye, and for a moment he could hardly breathe: Death was impatient...." page 693.
So first thing that came to mind once I finished was that there was SO MUCH left out of the movie. It was actually kind of sad when you consider how much potential that book had to make amazing movies. Personally I now see that what we all got to see on the big screen was, in fact, more of a let down then anything else.
That is always something that has kind of majorly bothered me about authors and their books. Now correct me if I am wrong, but don't authors get a say in the screen plays that get picked to portray their book? I mean at least to some extent? If that is the case then why, unless you were not getting any better offers, would you ever even dream of considering a screen play that leaves out so many important facts/ details from the original story?
I mean don't get me wrong I know that it's not just the authors that get a say but part of me would still hope that their word counts for a little more then anyone else'.
Anyways!! Enough about that rant! on to the actually talking about the book...I really did enjoy it. As I said above there were a lot more facts/details that were not included in the film therefor, in reading this story it kind of summed up and tied up any lose ends that had been made/left when I had originally seen the movie.
Amazingly enough Harry's whole 'attidude' that he has had, that tends to drive me up the wall at times, throughout the whole of the 'Harry Potter' books sort of disappeared in this last book. Or maybe I was just so caught up in all the extra facts/details that I didn't notice it as much? One way or another it was nice regardless.
So as far as the next book goes I was thinking for #22 we would go with "Wicked" by Gregory Maguire. I've been wanting to see the play for forever but haven't gotten the chance so hopefully this will hold me over until then.

   that's all for now,
    Michaela Jane

Book #19: "The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen" and Book #20: "Sever"...finished!!

Book #19 "The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen" by Syrie James: "I am not a writer, I admit. But in my experience, I have found that there is never a perfect time or place to do anything. We can always find a reason to put off that which we aspire to do, or fear to do, until tomorrow, next week, next month, next year-until, in the end, we never accomplished anything at all." pg. 127
I have to admit when I first got this book of the clearance shelf at Half-Price-Books I NEVER would have thought that I was going to enjoy it nearly half as much as I did. To tell you the truth it captivated me. I was like being in Jane Austen's head and her life, sure it still had the same writing feel to it as all of Austen's books but at the same time there was something slightly modern to it that really just made it more appealing overall.
It is without a doubt in my mind that I will re-read this book over and over and over and over again for many years to come. By far one of my favorites.
In conclusion with this book may I just say, that if you have any love, no matter how large or small, for Jane Austen's books then this is a must read for you. I can not express how much I loved this book. So enjoy!

Book #20 "Sever" by Lauren Destefano: "I was somebody's daughter once, and then I was somebody's wife. I'm neither of those things now. This sullen boy sitting before me is not my husband, and the girl he's fretting over isn't me, will never be me." pg. 92
So this was the conclusion of the 'Chemical Garden Trilogy' and even to this moment I still can't decide if the main chick, Rhine, ignored the crap out of me or not. She had her moments when I really liked her and then other times when I was just kinda like 'meh'.
The trilogy overall wasn't bad to be honest it really had a 'Hunger Games' kinda feel to it. So if your a fan of those and other 'end-of-the-world' types of books then you probably would really like these.
Personally I found the ending to be lacking something, not sure what but something. Just felt like she just kinda dropped it at a strange point, not that I wanted everyone to be skipping off into the sunset but a little more probably wouldn't have hurt anyone.
Other then that and the other biggest problem would be the lack of some really strong characters, not that the characters were really 'bad' per say it's more just that they lacked something. You follow me? (probably not but oh well)
So that is that, on to the next book. Number 21 is going to be "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" by J.K. Rowling. Partly because I really just need to finish these books and also partly because I'm kinda still in a Halloween mood and for some reason I think Harry Potter when I think of Halloween. No idea why.

That's all for now,
  Michaela Jane

Book #18: "Fever"...Finished!!

Book #18 "Fever" by Lauren DeStefano: 'I ran from the mansion because I wanted to be free. But there's no such thing as free. There are only different and more horrible ways to be enslaved.' -"Fever" pg. 39.
"Fever" is Destefano's follow up to "Wither", it continues to follow the story of Rhine as she is struggles to gain her freedom. At the end of "Wither" Rhine and Gabriel had managed to escape the mansion but now what to do? All Rhine knows is that she wants to get back to Manhattan and to her brother. And obviously it's not going to be as simple as it sounds.
Just when they start to think they are free they get caught up struggling to escape from one dire situation to another, that might be bad enough and even the fact that both Gabriel and Rhine struggle with different sicknesses throughout the book pretty much sucks, but the thing that i think counts as one of the biggest struggles that they face is that along the way they end up having to take care an orphaned/malformed girl named Maddie, who is just a child and can't talk.
Now I'm sure the thought of 'so what? it's just a kid.' crossed your mind, but when you are trying to to make your way across the country the without being killed or kidnapped I would think that a little kid to take care of is the last thing that you would want.
Once they do finally make it to Manhattan nothing about Rhine's old life is the same as it once was. Her brother is nowhere to be found and her house is just a skeleton of what it use to be. Frustrated, confused, and feeling completely out of other options Rhine, Gabriel, and Maddie make their way to an address that was written in a children's book of Maddie's hoping against hope that there might be something or someone there who can help them. By going to the mysterious address they soon find that maybe the world isn't as big as they once thought.
With the help from their new friends Rhine and Gabriel start to think that maybe they can make this work and have something similar  to a normal life, however Rhine who is slowly starting to near the age of 20 (the year that all girls pass away) starts getting sicker and sicker.
Even though I really really really REALLY want to I won't give away the ending, instead I will leave that to you to find for yourself. Next book up for #19 is "The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen" by Syrie James.

   Until Next Time,
    Michaela Jane

Book #17: "Wither" ...Finished!!

Book #17 "Wither" by Lauren DeStefano: 'Things here are more frightening than even I could have imagined. Life is much different from the days when there were lilies in my mother's garden, and all my secrets fit into a paper cup.' -pg. 204.
May I start by saying: This is probably one of the best books I have read yet! 'Wither' kept me captivated the entire time and had me to the point that I was reading it while walking to class and pretty much doing nothing else with my free time.
To give you an idea, it was very much so like the movie 'In Time' (yes the one with J.T. in it), all the kids that where born in this futuristic world died at the age of 25 for boys and 20 for girls. So in order to keep repopulating the earth the girls would get kidnapped as early as 13 to be sold as brides to the rich. 'Wither' follows the story of 16 year old Rhine Ellery, who is kidnapped and then sold to become a bride along with 2 other girls.
From the start Rhine does everything she can to get out of the fancy and more then slightly frightening world she has landed in and constantly has the goal of getting back to her twin brother, her home, and her freedom. As I have said DeStefano has a way of keeping her readers hooked. This has to be one of the best things I have read in a while.
I am deeply looking forward to finding out what happens to Rhine in the next book in the trilogy, which also happens to be book #18 and it is 'Fever' by Lauren DeStefano.

   That is all for now,
             Michaela Jane

Book #15: "Bright Young Things" and Book #16: "Remember Me?" ...Both Finished!

Book #15 "Bright Young Things" by Anna Godbersen: Ok, so Godbersen has also written the "The Luxe" series, which I am a pretty big fan of personally. Her newest series was allot like "The Luxe", more of a time period kind of thing.
"Bright Young Things" takes place in the 1920's in New York City. It is about two teenage girls, one due to be married off and the other under appreciated by her family, Cordelia and Letty running away from their homes in Ohio to go to the big city so they can see what what they can make of themselves and see just who it is that they are meant to be.
They end up going their own ways after only a few hours in the NY and Letty starts to work her way towards her dream of acting and singing on stage. She gets a job and learns that New York may not be all that she thought it would be. Cordelia however always had a different reason for wanting to go to New York, she wanted to find her long lost father whom just so happens to be one of NY's biggest gangsters/alcohol providers. She is instantly pulled into a world full of glamor and parties but there turns out to be so much that is not shown on the surface.
Overall It was a pretty good read for being more of a 'time period' book.

Book #16 "Remember Me?" by Sophie Kinsella: This book was one that my sister picked up off the Half Price Books (one of my favorite stores) clearance self over the summer and told me that if I was looking for something mindless to read that this would be a good book for that. And while I really don't mean this to be mean/rude to Kinsella, there is really no other way to describe this book other then a 'mindless read'.
Sure the plot was funny but it was very soap operaish. The main character, Lexi Smart, falls and hits her head and when she wakes up it is 3 years later and she looks amazing and is the boss at her old job and is married and oh did I mention insanely rich?? Not to bad huh? Man, I almost wish someone would hit me over the head so I could see what my life will be like in 3 years....I am kidding fyi.
So the story gets going and we follow as poor Lexi goes from one awkward situation to the next. From trying to remember how to live with her 'amazing' husband to trying to remember how she went from being the bottom at her job to become the boss that everyone now hates, including her three 'use-to-be' best friends.
Like I said if you are looking for something mindless to read then it isn't all that bad, however (and sorry, yes I am about to get on my soap box) the one bad thing that I would have to say about it would be all the talk of sex. And sorry, forgive me if I am wrong, but I personally don't think that you need to have sex brought up to make it a good book. But as I said that is just me.

Overall both books weren't to bad, not my favorites but not that bad. Next up for Book #17 is "Wither" by Lauren DeStefano. It is the first book in The Chemical Garden Trilogy.

That's all for now,
  Michaela Jane

Book #14: "Uncommon Criminals"....Finished!!

Book #14 "Uncommon Criminals" by Ally Carter: So this was a good follow up book as any to "Heist Society". It was all about the same crew however this time it starts with them being the ones to get conned and then they have to go and fix what happen by stealing back what they thought they had just returned to it's rightful owner. Got a little bit confusing at some points but overall, like I said, I really did enjoy it.
However, the one thing that did kind of bother me (and it drives me crazy when authors do this) was when the author spent unnecessary time focused on the love story and then when the end of the book comes around they didn't even end up telling us one way or the other what happen to the two people that might, or might not, have had something romantic going on between them. I mean come on if your going to spend time developing the love story at least go all the way through with it.
So yeah, other then that little pet peev of mine I thought that it was pretty good.
Next book up for #15 is "Bright Young Things" by Anna Godbersen. That is all for now.

   Until next time,

Book #13: "Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince" ...Finished!!

Book #13 "Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince" by J.K. Rowling:
Ok first things first, may I just say that, and maybe this is just me, but Harry Potter is so whiny!! like oh my gosh, don't get me wrong I enjoyed the book but there are times that I wish I could reach into the story and hit Harry upside the head with something and be like 'Shut up already!!' but anyways....
All of the Harry Potter books so far have proven one thing for me, that the movie is way way way WAY different then the book and that they leave so much out when converting books into movies. The amount of just little conversations, that would have added had they been in the movie, that are left out is just really quite sad.
The only other thing I can think of that I really wanted to comment on was, and I may be wrong considering that I have not watched this Harry Potter movie in a really really really long time, but didn't Harry and Ginny not start dating until the Deathly Hallows Part: 1 movie? I do not for the life of me remember them having any kind of relationship in 'The Half-Blood Prince'...but I could be wrong, like I said it's been a while.
Once again, Rowling did not disappoint and I am actually really looking forward to getting the next book and finishing this all up. Part of me in the beginning, when I first started reading these books, really didn't want to. However, looking back I'm really happy I took the time to read what are probably some of the most well known books of my generation. So those are all my thoughts for right now...next up is book #14 which is going to be "Uncommon Criminals" by Ally Carter.

   Until next time,
    Michaela Jane

Book #12: "Frankenstein" ....Finished!!!

Book #12 "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley: So I'm not going to wast my time or your time by going on and on and on about 'oh my gosh I haven't written on this blog in forever!' or any of that stuff let's instead just get right to the good stuff, shall we?
"Frankenstein" was, in a word, disturbing.
There is simply no other word for it! While reading it one can't help but wonder, 'what in the heck was Mary Shelley thinking?!'... personally I don't know that I want to know because my bet would be that she was one strange kid.
So I am going to be honest here and say the thing that probably bugged me the most about this was when Dr. Frankenstein (yes that's right the doctor's name is Frankenstein and they just call his creation either 'the creature' or 'the monster' the majority of the time) is creating the monster and right after it comes to life there is no 'IT'S ALIVE!!!!!' if fact Dr. Frankenstein then just kinda runs away.
Very disappointing to me for some strange reason.
The only other thing that i really gave any serious thought to was the fact that Dr. Frankenstein ends up marring his (basically) half-sister! EWW!! I mean surely there was someone else that Shelly could have had him marry?
All in all the story was good very full of grim and vivid details at every point (even on subjects that you didn't think it was possible to give so many details on).
That's all for book #12, next up for book #13 is "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".

   Until next time,
    Michaela Jane

Book #11: "Heist Socitety" ...Finished!!

Book #11 "Heist Society" by Ally Carter:Ok so if you happen to be one of those people that walk into banks or museums and suddenly find yourself wondering how, if perhaps you were a different person, you would go about robbing the place. Well join the club if you are! And maybe that says something disturbing about our personalities but what can I say? It's not like I ever go through with it or anything.
Anyways if you are one of these said people then chances are you would probably really like "Heist Society" its all about 5 teenager robbing one of the worlds best museums (and getting away with it). Kat Bishop is the heroine of the story and its not like she is going into steal 5 priceless paintings for the fun of it, she is actually trying to clear her father's name and somehow get away with it.
Now, and maybe this is just me, but every time I read one of these books or watch a movie where they go and pull of this huge crime I can't help but think 'Gosh, they make that look so easy' so I guess what I'm saying is: is it possibly for it to really be that easy?
I mean sure you have to know your stuff but maybe it is kinda like asking someone who has never played the piano to play something by Beethoven and they have no idea how to even start but then go ask someone who has been playing for years and they can sit down and play it no problem. Maybe it is just a practice kinda thing? Not that I am saying that stealing is right or whatever but it is kinda fascinating in its own kind of way for some reason.
Overall I thought it was a pretty good book :) it is number 1 in a group of 3. (yes I will be reading the other ones at some point) On another note, still working my way through book #12: "Frankenstein" next book up for #13 is going to be "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" by J.K.Rowling. More to come soon.

   Until next time,
         Michaela Jane

Book #10: "West Side Story"...Finished!!

Book #10 "West Side Story" - Irving Shulman: So I personally wasn't overly thrilled with this book. I mean sure, maybe it is better as a musical I wouldn't know.
The part that probably bothered me the most out of anything was the whole, 'oh these two random people end up going to a dance and see each other and immediately fall in love with each other and then in less then 48 hours he is talking to her about marring him' thing.
Does this not bother anyone else?
And then as if the whole marring a complete stranger thing doesn't bother you at all then you start to realize that the whole story has a very Romeo and Juliet kind of feel to it, both Maria and Tony come from to different worlds and they are pretty much forbidden to be together but they vow to make it work anyways (when has that ever worked for anyone?).
As the story starts coming to a close it gets crazy, still keeping with the whole Romeo and Juliet thing that they have going on, and then before you know it people start dying right and left. And maybe it ends differently in the musical (don't worry I'm not going to give the ending away) but the way that the book ended was just really abrupt, and in my opinion, kind sorta lame and stupid. Shulman just kind of drops you leaving you wondering to yourself, "what the heck?".
Like I have said before, I have not seen the musical so maybe I have no room to judge but my final thought on "West Side Story" is that it is just a more modern day rip off of the Romeo and Juliet story. And let's be serious for a moment, how many times has that story line been redone now?
Didn't really hate it but didn't really love it either. However, I would be interested in seeing the musical even if only for the sake of seeing how it compares to the book.
Okay so I am going to be doing something a little different. I am going to be reading two books at a time, mostly cuz I have more time now that it is Summer but also cuz I really need to pick up the pace if I am going to have any chance of finishing all these books by the end of the year. So book #11 is going to be "Heist Society" by Ally Carter and #12 "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley. I will be posting about each once I get to the halfway points. That's all for now.
   Until next time,

Book #9: "Julie & Julia"...Finished!!

Book #9 "Julie & Julia" -Julie Powell: So as you can tell I have been doing nothing but reading with my summer so far, which has been perfectly fine by me.
"Julie & Julia" (along with having numerous French words that I can't pronounce, excessive use of the 'f word', and lots of unnecessary talk about Julie's friend's sex lives) however, was actually really funny. I can honestly say that I did not expect to laugh while reading a book about some crazy lady from New York who got it in her head to cook her way through a French cookbook (some 500 and something recipes) in a year, sounds almost like trying to read 100 books in a year. But maybe it is just really in my head that these two could ever even start to be considered on the same level of impressiveness.
Overall, I really enjoyed the read. It wasn't at all what I thought it was going to be. I've been a huge fan of the movie, starring Meryl Steep and Amy Adams, ever sense the first time I saw it. And then when I read the book it was the same but at the same time it was different (if that even makes any sense). At first I was really disappointed but then I got into the book at it turns out that it has all the humor and awkwardness that just didn't make it into the movie and it was fantastic in a completely different, and yet wonderful, kind of way.
So yeah, I guess you could say I liked it.
Next book up for ...wait for it...#10!! (WOO DOUBLE DIGITS)Is going to be a novelization of the Broadway musical "West Side Story" -Irving Shulman. I will say this now, I have never seen nor have I ever been told the storyline of "West Side Story" which seems kind of bad to me for some reason...so much so that I am apparently feeling the need to apologize for my lack of "West Side Story" knowledge.
   Anyways, that's all for now,
         Michaela Jane

Book #9: "Julie & Julia"...Halfway

Book #9 "Julie & Julia" -Julie Powell: So I've come to the point that I am a little more then halfway through "Julie & Julia" and there are 3 main thoughts that have come to mind thus far. One being what we are going to consider the 'bad' thought ( to tell you the truth it's a bit of a 'soap-box-issue' for me), one being the 'good' thought I guess you could call it that, I mean it only makes sense that if your going to have a 'bad' thing you might as well follow it up with a 'good' one right?, and finally the thought that is leaving me in a bit of a predicament. So let's get started, shall we?
Okay before I start in on this first one I promise that I will try my very best not to go on to much of a rant...try being the key word. My issue is this: It always works one of two ways, either the book you are reading will be this amazing/awesome book and there is nothing that you can think of could make it better and then you find out that they made it into a movie and you go watch it and they totally take out all the good stuff from the book and replace it by pointless... wait for it...sex. If you have ever read and then watched "The Vow" you know exactly what I am talking about. However, if it doesn't happen this first way then it will be the opposite: you will end up seeing this movie and you fall in love with it and watch it a billion times and then you find out that its a book and you get all excited and go to read it and ...well I don't really need to explain that there is a bunch of pointless talk about sex in the whole book do I? "Julie & Julia", I'm sorry to say, is a perfect example of the second example mentioned above. It was just so unnecessary and really just takes away from the storyline in general.
Moving on the 'good' thought, for lack of a better name, the whole chapter and half when Julie is talking about killing and then cooking lobster serisously made me laugh so hard. The way she writes when she is talking about standing in her kitchen faced with the task of cutting up a live lobster has a way of making you feel like you are there with her. Part of me wonders however, if it is not slightly over-dramatized for the books sake. But serisouly though, if it's not then I want to be there in person to see someone cook a lobster for the first time someday cause I'm pretty sure it would be the most entertaining thing in the world. :)
Final thought is this: I have always been a very kind of monkey-see-monkey-do kind of person, for example when I first saw the movie "Racing Strips" when I was like 10 (or something) I went around pretending that I had a imaginary pet Zebra for at least a month. Sad I know. Anyways, I am older now, and hopefully not quite as crazy as my 10 year old self used to be, but as I sit and read about all this cooking I am having the insane urge to go and try to cook something myself. This is quite a predicament though when you consider that my cooking abilities start with a bowl of cereal and end somewhere around kraft mac n' cheese. I find that it will probably be best not to put my family members, not to mention myself, at risk with lack of cooking skills and I should probably just avoiding the urge to cook all together. Leave it to Julie Powell, besides she makes it so much more entertaining for the rest of us.
That's all for now, book should be finished with the final thoughts up by the end of the week.
    Until next time,
     Michaela Jane

Book #8: "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" ...Finished!!

Book #8: "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"-J.K. Rowling:
'Order of the Phoenix' is Rowling's 5th installment in the Harry Potter story and before you start questioning my sanity as to why on earth I started reading from the middle I assure you I have previously read the first 4!
In 'Order of the Phoenix' Harry is not only dealing with, what is undoubtedly, his hardest year yet at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry but he is also busy trying to find out all the information he can about what he-who-must-not-be-named has been up to sense his return at the end of last term.
Throughout the book Harry deals with being attacked, ridiculed, ignored, put in detention, kicked off the quidditch team, losing the closest thing he has ever had to a parent, and finally coming face to face once again with Lord Voldemort.
J.K. Rowling never disappoints and 'The Order of the Phoenix' is no different. It is action packed from beginning to end. Answering many questions readers have been asking from the start of the story and leaving it hanging with many many new and deeper questions as the plot line brings the reader deeper and deeper into the magical world of Harry Potter.
Overall, as always with J.K. Rowling, it was a very good read :) Next book up for #9 is going to be something a bit different it's "Julie & Julia" -Julie Powell. I have seen the movie probably 50 times and just love it so I'm hoping the book is just as good if not better.
Oh, and by the way readers HAPPY SUMMER!!! :) (or for me it is summer already anyways). With the start of summer here that means the reading pace will be picking up dramatically from what it has been I promise!
    Until next time,

Book #7: "Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy"...Finished!!

Book #7: "Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy"- Ally Carter:
"Gallagher Girls are supposed to be prepared for anything and everything. Even though I'm pretty sure we could handle an invasion by enemy forces, one glance at my classmates told me that not a single Gallagher Girl felt fully prepared for the sight of fifteen boys standing in the doorway of the Grand Hall" (pg. 87).
The spring semester, and the book, starts with the heroine of our book, Cameron Morgan, being debriefed in a super secret government facility in D.C. and heading back to school as determined as ever to not go looking for trouble and just get through the semester in peace.
However Cammie doesn't have to worry about going to look for trouble, it shows up at the Gallagher Academy's front door...with suitcases.
15 boys, from the mysterious Blackthorn Institute for Boys, end up moving in with the Gallagher Girls and attending their classes. The girls have a crazy time trying to figure out these boys. Are they here just to learn? Are they planning to infiltrate the Gallagher Academy and learn all its secrets just to use them against the Gallagher Girls?
As always Cammie has her hands full between keeping up with classes, her first school dance, avoiding Josh on school trips into town, and finding out all she can about the newest students at their school especially one in particular, Zach.
That is all I will be telling you cuz I really really really think that you should go read these books. I have said before I have read this book before but it never seems to get old. Yet another one of my all time favorites for sure. :)
Next up is book #8 : "Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix" by J.K. Rowling. Now before you question if I have lost my mind and if I know that I am starting in the middle of the series the answer is yes. Duh, I know that. What do I look like?... Don't answer that last question. Anyways, I have previously read the first 4 in the Harry Potter series. By the way I want to apologize for my current pace that I am reading at as soon as school is out in a few weeks I will be going through these books so fast you won't be able to keep up with reading these blog posts!
   That's all for now!
   Until next time,

Book #6: "I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You" ..Finished!

Book #6: "I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You" - Ally Carter : I want to start by saying that this is one of my all time favorite books, which might sound funny when you take into account it's about a high school girl falling in love for the first time.
Before you get all carried away with thinking, 'wow, she only likes books about immature kids in high school.' Let say this, IT IS NOT TRUE! I just happen to get a good laugh out of awkward-teenage-girl-who-doesn't-have-any-idea-how-to-talk-to-boys kinda books.
Let's be honest here, who doesn't like reading one of those books every know and then? Anyways, so this book is no exception to the whole awkward-teenage-girl-thing.
Cammie Morgan goes to Gallagher Academy For Exceptional Young Women, however when they say 'exceptional' they have a very different meaning then the traditional sense of the word. Gallagher Academy is a boarding school for girls who are in training to be spies. Cammie has been attending this school with all her best friends, Liz and Bex, for the last 3 years and have learned from many different teachers all of whom are the best of the best and came from the CIA, MI6, and other organizations(which happen to be classified).
However, they may teach you how to speak several different languages at spy school but the one they most definitely do not teach you is 'boy'. And Cammie finds that out all to soon when she ends up meeting a boy, Josh, in the middle of a practice mission. What's a girl undercover supposed to do when approached by a cute guy who has no clue that she could know about 14 different ways to knock him out before he could even have the chance to say hello?
This starts a whole chain of events that go from crazy to insane. Cammie, Liz and Bex with the help of the school newbie Macy, end up doing some serious recon on 'the subject' a.k.a Josh (who ends up being Cammie's boyfriend). From braking into his home when he is out, to stealing his trash, and putting a tracking device into his sneaker, all so they can come one step closer to finding out just how boys work. While this may all seem a little out there to us this is just another day at school for these spies.
Cammie finds that she can't have it all, the super secret spy life and the hot boyfriend, it's a choice between the life she's always known and the world she's always wanted to know.
That's all I'm going to be telling you, if you wanna know more your just gonna have to go read it for yourself. :)
Next up is book #7 which will be "Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy" - Ally Carter. Yes, it is the second book in the series. Don't judge, I'm telling you these are awesome books! Until next time!

Book #5: "Ripple Effect" ...Finished!!

March 22, 2013 Book#5 "Ripple Effect" by Paul McCusker: So It was pretty good I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. Elizabeth ended up living "Sarah's" life for a while and then ends up finding out that everyone in it is out to kill her! Yeah, heavy stuff. But, in the end her friend Jeff 'universe jumps' (for lack of a better term) and comes to save the day.
And just as I said in my last post it was just like in "Fringe" where there is a copy of each of us in the other universe. There was actually a whole lot of similar things in the book that were the same in "Fringe".. I checked and the book came out in 2008 and "Fringe" started up around the same time so it is simply a coincidence.
Overall it was a pretty good read. However, I noticed after I was done reading it that it is part of a trilogy so I will have to go track down the other two books now.
Book #6 is "I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You" by Ally Carter. This is actually a book that I have already read but it's been a while and it is one of my favorites! So yeah, that's all there is for this time. More to come soon!

Book #5: "Ripple Effect"

March 20, 2013 "Ripple Effect" by Paul McCusker: Okay, so this book I only came across because it fell off out when I was trying to get a different book. It is about a teenage girl, Elizabeth Forde, who is sick of her 'embarrassing' parents and so decides to run away.
Cause you know that is the way to handle things..
So anyway the night before she is going to make a run for it with her best friend, Jeff, she decides to take a bath (you know cause if your going to run away you might as well be clean). Anyways, so she takes a bath and while she is in there strange things start to happen until she it literally PULLED UNDER THE WATER AND HELD THERE FOR A FEW MINS! Now reader I don't know about you but after reading this I am going to be a little bit worried next time I go to take a bath. Anyways, so finally she is let go and she comes out of the water and it is all muddy with grass in it and understandably she freaks out. She struggles for a good almost 2 pages to get out of the tub, which I must confess I found slightly humorous, after she gets out it is all downhill from there. She seems to have come out of the water into an "alternate reality".
Personally, the whole book has a kind of "Fringe" (TV show) feel to it so far.
She soon finds that other people are living in her house and everyone keeps referring to her as "Sarah". Freaky huh? Turns out the house is now "Sarah's boyfriend's house" and "Sarah" has been living there with her bf and his parents, who seem to hate her.
In short her "boyfriend", Calvin, takes her to the Doctor and she ends up getting put in the psych ward, shocker I know! Meanwhile, back in her reality everyone is freaking out thinking that she has just run away by herself.
You are now up to date on the frist 60 pages of "Ripple Effect" more to come soon!

Book #4: "Revenge of the Nerd" ..Finished!!

March 17, 2013: 'Revenge of the Nerd' by John McNamara So I randomly decided to pick up this book when roaming around the library, mostly because of the title. I have always considered myself a bit of a nerd at heart :).
Anyway so I got this book, it was an extremely easy read (I needed something easy to read after the first two books) of a classic story line of a Nerd in high school, Bertram, and how he loves the classically beautiful blond, Louise, (who somehow is good a science, yes I know that doesn't make any sense.. what blond is good at science? ....i am just kidding i hope you know that). Every time he goes to talk to this amazing girl he "can't put a noun and verb together to save my life".
And when he isn't messing it all up for himself with this girl his arch nemesis Mike Godey is tripping him, calling him names, and just in general trying to make him look bad. Finally, after a prank by Mike involving a fake love letter that looks like it is from Louise that ends with everyone (including Louise) laughing at him, he decides that he can take it no more and that he will get his revenge on them all.
He ends up figuring out a way to transmit a live video feed to other people's TVs from his room and this is what he does to Louise, Mike, and two of Mike's friends who were also in on the prank. He dresses up as an alien and changes his voice and ends up convincing them that they are being contacted by another world and that they have a very special mission to do.
If you follow the whole idea of the classic story line it shouldn't be hard to figure out how this all ends. Turns out that while revenge seems sweet sometimes it doesn't get you all that you  every hoped that it would.
Overall, it was a nice classic, funny, and easy read. Next book up is 'Ripple Effect' by Paul McCusker. That's all for now!

Book #3 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' finished!

March 16, 2013: Book #3 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower': Just finished! First thing that I got to say about it is that I loved how it didn't have a 'happy ending' like in all the generic movies and books that are in our generation today. You know what I mean? It was very refreshing to finish a book with the feeling of not really knowing if Charlie, the main person, was going to be okay in a few days when he starts feeling sad or lonely again. You really hope he does, but at the same time you can't say that he will with absolute certainty.
I have never related to a book more in my whole life. And if you have read it then no, I don't mean that all the stuff that has happen to Charlie I relate to,but just the feeling in general of livingon the fringes of life and always feeling like your trying to see what makes everyone the way they are and hoping that maybe it will help you figuer out why you are the way you are.
So as I sit here with my finished book in front of me I don't really feel sad that it's over. I feel like I have been given some kind of insight into something that I just can't exsplain to you becuase I just have no words for it. I'm sitting here listening to the playlist that Charlie made for Patrick'schristmas gift and I just understand what it was that Chbosky wanted to get across in this book.
So if you haven't read it.GO.READ.THIS.BOOK.
I have nothing more for you. However I will leave you with these words from Charlie's last letter, "So, I guess we arewho we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we'll never know most of them. But even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them."

   Love always,
  Michaela Jane
P.S. Book #4 will be 'Revenge of the Nerd' by John Mcnamara.

Book #3 : 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'

March 13,2013: "So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be." - Charlie from 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower'
WOW. I mean just wow. I had heard that this book was good but I have to admit I wasn't ready for just how good it is. It is only day 5 reading it and I'm only on page 80 but I can already say with absolute certainty that I'm going to be extremely sad when I am done with this book.
A couple things that I must point out to you: On pages 70-73 there is seriously the most amazing poem. He never tells who it's by, wish he did cuz it is probably one of the best things I have ever read. I would write it here but it is really long and I don't want to make this so long that you feel like jumping off a cliff from boredom trying to read it.
The second thing that I wanted to point out was that in the book Charlie makes Patrick a mix tape and in the book Chbosky writes out a list of all the songs that are on it. May I recommend that you go listen to them all? And you have to listen to them in the right order. It is in a word: AMAZING.
So these are my thoughts so far :)

      Love always,
      Michaela Jane

Starting off..(just a bit late!)

March 10, 2013:  Picture me sitting just a few days before New Years racking my brain trying to think of something that wasn't completely dorky for a New Years resolution. I generally hate making resolutions, I always end up forgetting about it. This year, 2013, was going to be different!
So then something possessed me to undertake the challenge of reading 100 books in only 1 year! Not sure what I was thinking but January 1st came and went and I started my challenge. It has had quite the rocky start but we are on are way! It isn't quite half way through March and I am only on book 3... now I know what you are thinking, 'There is no way she is going to finish.' or 'Reading this stupid blog is just stupid...why did I even click on this?'
BUT!! Before you do close me out please first hear me out! I will finish and I will read these 100 books and as I read them I would love nothing more then to hear your thoughts, opinions, and anything else you feel like saying to me. I will not just be posting when I finish the book but also while I am reading it, so that way you can experience it with me every step of the way. :)
I would love nothing more then to have you along with my on this journey and I hope you will come along! Please feel free to speak your mind if you have an opinion on a book I am reading I would love nothing more!! Also if you have a favorite book that you think is just a "MUST READ" then feel free to tell me about that as well! I am open to reading anything and everything!

The first 2 books I have read are:
#1) Title: "Inheritance"
    By: Christopher Paolini
         Page Count: 849
Thoughts: (First let me start by saying that these two first book descriptions are going to be really short and kinda basic I promise to get more elaborate from now on.)Anyway, if you are someone who enjoys the whole dragons/magical world kinda books then this book, which is the 4th and last in a series, is defiantly for you. Paolini does the most amazing job with his books and making his magical world of Alagesia come to life and jump from the page.

#2) Title: "The Two Towers"
    By: J. R. R. Tolkien
    Page Count: 352
Thoughts: Wow. What can you say about a book by Tolkien? Everyone of them that I have read has been amazing! At least everyone has heard of the hobbit Frodo and how he goes on his quest to destroy the 'one ring'. The book is the second installment of Tolkien's 'Lord Of The Rings' series. A classic and yet another amazing read.

This is all for now, next book I am going to conquer will be 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' - Stephen Chbosky. I only started it yesterday and don't have many thoughts on it yet. I'm sure that will all change in a matter of days though.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts and book suggestions over the next year!
Until next time fellow readers,
   Michaela Jane
